Tamarindo for British buyers.
£400K-£2.4M property range, the British community, lifestyle, and what to know before you commit.
Tamarindo is the first town in Costa Rica most North American buyers hear about — and for good reason: it's the most accessible. 1-hour drive from Daniel Oduber Quirós International (LIR) in Liberia, which connects to 30+ cities in North America with direct flights. For British buyers planning frequent visits — or wanting easily-reachable property — Tamarindo is the obvious choice.
Why Brits pick Tamarindo
Main reason — access. While LIR doesn't have a London direct yet, US/Canadian hubs (MIA, JFK, IAD, YYZ) are 1-stop from London and Tamarindo's just 1 hour from LIR. From October 2026 when BA goes 5x/week LHR-SJO, Tamarindo via SJO + 4 hr drive becomes equally viable.
Three more reasons
- Developed infrastructure — Liberia private hospital within 30 min, shopping centres, international supermarkets (Walmart, PriceSmart), restaurants every cuisine
- Family-friendly — excellent international schools, safe beach for kids, fewer waves, more play
- Nightlife — for buyers wanting it: Tamarindo has an active bar scene that places like Nosara don't
Character
Most "Western" of the Pacific-coast towns — closer to Florida or Mexican beach resorts in tourism, infrastructure, nightlife. Most traders speak English. Most menus in English. Less rural, more standard. Some Brits love this; others prefer Santa Teresa because "Tamarindo feels like Miami-light". Matter of taste.
Property types
- Condos in complexes — £400K-£1.2M. Many modern complexes with pool, security, management on behalf of owners (suits investors).
- Hill villas — £640K-£2.4M. Ocean view, privacy, larger plots.
- Family homes — £480K-£1.2M. In quieter areas near the schools.
- Commercial beach property — £1.2M+. For investors with short-term-let strategies on high tourist traffic.
British community
Established and growing British cluster in Tamarindo. Smaller than the American/Canadian one, but very present — including retirees, B&B operators, real estate professionals. British-American Chamber of Commerce active in San José but Tamarindo has its own informal British expat network.
Schools for British families
- Costa Rica International Academy (CRIA) — one of the best international schools in CR. K-12, English, expensive (£12-19K/year).
- Country Day School Guanacaste — second major international school. K-12.
- Educarte — French-CR option.
Climate — hot and dry
Unlike Santa Teresa (tropical-humid), Tamarindo is dry and hot. Completely dry winter (Dec-Apr), summer with occasional rain. Climatically closer to Spain's south coast. Suits Brits who know Mediterranean climate.
Tamarindo suits Brits wanting convenience, accessibility, established family life. Less adventurous than Santa Teresa, less luxurious than Nosara, but easiest to operate. If you have school-age children, fly in monthly for business, or prefer livelier life — Tamarindo works.
